What is DAS and why your business needs it

Distributed Antenna Systems have been making waves in the telecommunications and communication infrastructure networks for a few years. They help businesses improve their wireless coverage and mobile signals within buildings and these have direct implications on revenue potential and customer satisfaction for any organization. But what are they? And does your business need it? We’re here to answer these very questions.

First up, what is a Distributed Antenna System (DAS)?

A distributed antenna system is a wireless connectivity solution that amplifies cellular signals that your building/space receives and then distributes them across the complex using small passive antennas. It is a network system of remote antennas that transports mobile signals at full strength to any remote antenna connected to using DAS. This connectivity solution is primarily used within buildings to ensure maximum coverage across all areas.

Typically, there are two types of in-building DAS solutions: Active DAS and Passive DAS.

Active DAS systems often use optic cables to distribute signals. This involves a centralized signal source and remote nodes around a building. Active DAS components also require a power source to operate. Generally used in large infrastructure such as high-rise buildings, hospitals, stadiums etc, these network systems require complex and expert RF engineering.

Passive DAS systems typically use coaxial cables, however, there may be cases where optical cables are required as well. Bi-directional amplifiers to rebroadcast signals from a macro cellular network using a donor signal on the roof is a common feature. That said, passive DAS solutions are typically cheaper than active DAS due to the various components required to make such a system.

That said, there are outdoor DAS solutions as well that ensure better coverage and capacity across open areas and these are generally used in tandem with indoor DAS solutions to ensure complete coverage.

Advantages of Equipping Your Business or Building with DAS

  1. Stronger Signal – A strong network and good cellphone connectivity is expected to be omnipresent in today’s world of IoT and 5G. DAS is especially good at this and can guarantee your business/building is fully equipped for connectivity.
  2. Carrier Agnostic – Unlike small cell solutions, DAS can handle all carriers effectively which really helps in the modern age of multiple MNOs.
  3. Cost-Effective – DAS solutions typically rely on several low-power antennas instead of many high-power antennas, although in some large properties high-power antennas may also be required, a considerable amount of power is saved which amounts to a great deal of money over time.
  4. Future Ready – With AR/VR, virtual meetings, and an increasing amount of cellular devices at your workplace, DAS solutions prepare your building to handle the connectivity requirements of today and tomorrow. These solutions are very easy to scale and can easily be upgraded as technology gets better and better in this space.

Expert DAS Antenna Design & In-Building Wireless Solutions

All said DAS solutions are unique to each building and there really isn’t a one-fit-for-all. This is generally due to varying building materials, shapes, and a bunch of other external factors including carrier equipment and antennas used. As a result, these solutions require a professional network design to get the most value for your buck.

That’s where Kaytech Coverage comes in. We are experts in DAS Antenna Design & In-Building Wireless Solutions who take care of all your connectivity needs from scratch to deliver to you a turn-key coverage solution. We also help you prepare for upcoming technologies including 5G and IoT to ensure that you’re equipped to always meet the requirements of your clients and business.

If you’re looking to improve the in-building connectivity of your building, we have the perfect solution for you.
